Food of the Bible: Milk and Honey
Why did God promise a land flowing with milk and honey? He wanted His people to know that despite the heat, humidity and limited resources, He would miraculously provide a constant, abundant supply of two of the most treasured food staples of their time.
This provision was not only literal in the supply of richness of food and drink, but also spiritual in the richness of His blessings as referred to many times in scripture.
Goat's Milk:
- contains twice the healthful medium-chain fatty acids, such as capric and caprylic acids, which are highly anti-microbial. (They actually killed the bacteria used to test for the presence of antibiotics in cow's milk!)
- closer to human milk than cow's milk and is therefore easily accepted especially by those young or frail.
- has an alkaline reaction the same as mother's milk. (Cow milk has an acid reaction)
Spiritual benefits:
- Abundance [Gen 49:12]
- A loved one's charms [Song 4:11]
- Blessings [Isa 55:1; Joel 3:18]
- Food of spiritually immature people [1 Cor 3:2; Heb 5:12,13]
- Purity [1 Pet 2:2]
Honey:
Physical benefits:
- helps reduce chest disorders and coughs. It soothes sore throats.
- improves chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, sinus problems and allergies.
- hastens the healing of wounds. Reduces inflammation.
- helps sooth the skin and clears many skin disorders. Its amino acids and vitamin C speeds the growth of healthy tissue.
- facilitates the digestion and assimilation of other foods.
Spiritual benefits:
- Luxury [Gen 43:11; 1 Ki 14:3]
- Sweet to the soul & healing to the bones [Prov 16:24]
- Related to wisdom [Prov 24:13-14]
